Melvin Taylor
CHICAGO BLUES LEGEND MELVIN TAYLOR
Melvin Taylor is a star in Europe, but it may take some time for U.S. audiences to catch on to just how phenomenally talented a bluesman he is. Part of the problem for Taylor may be his own natural eclecticism. He's equally adept playing jazz or blues, but in the last few years, he's forged a name for himself as a blues guitarist with a slew of releases for Evidence Music. Taylor may well be the most talented new guitarist to come along since Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Taylor was born in Mississippi but raised in Chicago after the family moved there in 1962. He learned guitar from his mother's brother, Uncle Floyd Vaughan, who jammed to tunes by Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed and Howlin' Wolf with his buddies. By the time Taylor was 12, he was sitting in with his uncle and other grown-ups at those sessions. Almost entirely self-taught, the young Taylor learned slide playing, finger-picking and flat-picking styles from his favorite recordings by B.B. King, Albert King and Jimi Hendrix.
Taylor's recordings include two he first recorded for a French label that have seen been reissued on the Pennsylvania-based Evidence Music: "Blues on the Run", originally recorded in 1982, and 1984's "Melvin Taylor Plays the Blues for You". Back in the U.S., Taylor continued to build a buzz around the strength of his marathon live shows at Rosa's Lounge and other venues in Chicago. Several small labels tried to sign Taylor, but they weren't successful. In 1995, Taylor was signed to Evidence Music and entered the studio with blues impresario John Snyder to record his debut for the label, "Melvin Taylor and the Slack Band", which showcased his original songwriting. He returned in late 1996 to record his second U.S. album, "Dirty Pool". Taylor's debut remains the Evidence label's best-selling release ever. Both records showcase Taylor's awe-inspiring guitar playing and original renderings of classic Chicago blues tunes. "Bang the Bell" followed in 2000, featuring racy cover art and a somewhat funk-influenced sound, but it was his teaming with Lucky Peterson and Mato Nanji on 2002's "Rendezvous with the Blues" that cemented his reputation as a mainstay in the American blues and roots rock scene.
"One of the most exhilarating blues guitarists to emerge in the past decade...[he] is more a blues innovator than a purist, mixing jazz chords and rock influences into his tapestry of electric blues" – ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE
"A volcanic guitarist... the sort of virtuosity that drags an audience into a world of risks and chances and excitement." – THE NEW YORK TIMES

Brave Combo

BRAVE COMBO
Brave Combo. Rarely, if ever, has a band name been more apropos, not only at the group's inception, but even more so 26 years after the fact. At first glance, back in 1979, the Denton, Texas, based outfit was, in shorthand, pegged as a New Wave polka band, a courageous if not almost oxymoronic endeavor during that particular rebirth of the cool. Yet it clicked and launched a stunning run that has now catapulted it into the new century. Over the last 26 years, Brave Combo has collected a dizzying array of descriptive musical pegs, boldly going where few bands have gone before, and even fewer could (or would) dare to venture. Succeeding in its first mission, Brave Combo is America's premier contemporary polka band, and a Grammy winning one at that. In the same breath, to name some but hardly all of the colors found on Brave Combo's musical palette, one can describe them as a groundbreaking world music act, a hot jazz quintet, a rollicking rock'n'roll bar band, a Tex-Mex conjunto, a sizzling blues band, a saucy cocktail combo, a deadly serious novelty act, a Latin orchestra, and one of America's dance bands par excellence. It's all in a night's music for Brave Combo, often in a synergistic fashion that includes everything from klezmer surf rock to rocking cha cha to what The Washington Post calls "mosh pit polka," as well as to the hokey pokey and the chicken dance. And zyedeco, acid rock, Muzak, bubblegum, cumbia, classical, and the twist, to still not exhaust the list. This plethoric multitude of musical styles and flavors is frequently mixed, matched, and melded, into delicious, new concoctions by an imaginative team of musical gourmet master chefs.

UVULITTLE Recording Artist Jim Schwall
UVULITTLE RECORDING ARTIST JIM SCHWALL
Jim Schwall, Guitar, Mandolin, singer-songwriter - is the co-leader of the Siegel-Schwall Band, "one of the best acts in America", - Billboard Magazine.
After playing drums and accordion in elementary school, Jim Schwall found the guitar in high school and has never put it down for long. In college, Jim met piano/harmonica player Corky Siegel and formed the Siegel-Schwall Band. Siegel-Schwall toured full-time for about ten years, releasing over a dozen albums on Vanguard and Wooden Nickel Records. Siegel-Schwall starting playing occasional reunion gigs in the late '80's and currently have two recent CD's in the Alligator Records catalog.
For well over 40 years, Jim has also played with various other bands, releasing recordings with many of these, including two versions of the Jim Schwall Band. He has also played solo acoustic gigs for over 40 years but, aside from acetates cut in high school, never made a solo acoustic recording until 2007's "Getting Old," on Madison WI's Uvulittle Records. Currently he lives in Madison, is a member of SoDangYang along with singer/songwriter Marques Bovre, plays solo, works in visual arts, and is recently retired from social service work.

Otenki
Like A Movie + Better Luck+ So Called Tragedy + To Write Her A Letter

OTENKI
Formed in the summer of 2004, the rock/pop quintet of Otenki (now consisting of Enoma Asowata (rhythm guitar/vocals), German Hernandez( lead vocals), Fausto Padilla(lead guitar/vocals/programming), Josh Tenorio(bass/vocals) and new comer Kris Hiatt(drums)) had a start that most bands would envy. Formed through exchanging emails through mutual friends, within six months of being a band, they headed to California to record their first EP. Also during those formative months, they were selected by MySpace users to play with My Chemical Romance and The Used during the inaugural year of the Taste of Chaos Tour. Shortly after that they performed at the 2005 Vans Warped Tour and the 2006 Taste of Chaos tour.
The band opted to hit the road for a 2 month self booked/promoted full US tour. They continued to hone their skills while being on the road and enduring the hardships of the DIY lifestyle. While continuing the writing process the band knew they would have to look beyond themselves to bring out all the potential the new material had. At the end of the band’s summer tour, the decision was made to work with record producer Paul Leavitt. Leavitt’s work includes pop punk heavy weights All Time Low, and Over It, as well as The Bled, Senses Fail, Circa Survive, Conditions, Mercy Mercedes, and newly signed Gwen Stacy. In November of 2007 the band headed to Valencia Recording Studio in Baltimore to work on the collection of songs that would become "Making Sense of Static".
"As the title of the record suggests, the songs are about finding your place in the world. This record is the summation of us trying to figure ourselves out. And hopefully people can take hold of something to relate to in it," states Asowata. Starting out with the darkest and heaviest song "Empty Words", a song about the falling out of friends or lovers, to the ending track "The Impossible", a power-pop anthem of chasing dreams but being thankful for what you have, Otenki has redefined themselves with this effort. With thousands of miles clocked, over one hundred of shows played, and a ever growing fan base, Otenki has risen from the ashes a transformed group of wiser, more focused individuals that share one goal…to never slow down.

Harry And The Potters
Math The Band + Uncle Monsterface
HARRY AND THE POTTERS
Imagine if Harry Potter quit the quidditch team and started a punk rock band. Take that one step further and imagine that he stole a time-turner and decided to start that band with himself from a different point in time. This is the premise of Harry and the Potters which brings Massachusetts-based brothers Paul and Joe DeGeorge together as Harry Year 7 and Harry Year 4, a rock and roll band that has captured the literary-minded ears of people all over the world. Their energetic live shows seem to answer the question, "What would happen if Bruce Springsteen had been reincarnated as a boy wizard?"
